Grandfather Mountain
One of Blue Ridge’s most iconic peaks, Grandfather Mountain is much more than just a big hill. The private park is one of the only privately-run operations designated as an International Biosphere Reserve by the United Nations, and the top of the mountain is a staggering 5, 946 feet above sea level. What makes this place a must-see location for tourists and locals alike is the Mile High Swinging Bridge; along with an adrenaline rush, visitors are rewarded for their bravery with a stunning view from Linville Peak. Grandfather Mountain will thrill both nature lovers and adventurous types alike.
Tweetsie Railroad and the Foggy Mountain Gem Mine
If you’re looking for an attraction that’s appropriate for the whole family, Tweetsie Railroad in North Carolina’s High Country will be exactly what you’re looking for. At this location, visitors can ride in an authentic steam locomotive (not a replica) and pan for gold; in nearby Boone, tourists can also visit the Foggy Mountain Gem Mine. Along with searching for gems, there are expert gem cutters on staff and there’s a very informative museum onsite for those who want to know more about the industry’s history.
Hickory Ridge Homestead
Hickory Ridge Homestead is a living museum for those who like to take a walk in history. Here, visitors can see what life was like in the Appalachians 300 years ago. Interpreters and staff are dressed in authentic 18th century clothes; visitors get to see how self-sufficient previous generations were, and how they managed to survive with very limited resources. There are plenty of hands-on interactive workshops like candle-making and weaving for children and other visitors to keep everyone entertained. For those who like educational activities that are also entertaining, a visit to the Hickory Ridge Homestead is an absolute must. The living museum is open mid-June to mid-August, Tuesday through Sunday. Special celebrations are scheduled for the Fourth of July and events such as the Hickory Ridge Games featuring sports from the 1700’s take place every year.
