A man-made lake created in 1942, Lake Chatuge spans over 7,000 acres amid the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The lake is located on the North Carolina-Georgia state line and is surrounded by the Nantahala National Forest on the NC side and the Chattahoochee National Forest on the Georgia side.
Lake Chatuge is located near the rural towns of Hiawassee and Young Harris.
The lake is on the Chatuge Dam, which was originally created by the Tennessee Valley Authority to provide flood control at the Hiwassee Dam, located further downstream. Now the dam also provides usable hydroelectric power to the area. Its shoreline spans 130 miles.
Lake Chatuge Activites
Owning a piece of land near Lake Chatuge means easy access to lots of outdoor activities and activities on the lake. For the avid fisher, expect to catch trout, spotted bass, bluegill, catfish and carp on the lake. Or, if you’re just looking to relax, rent a pontoon boat to spend the day out on the lake’s beautiful waters.
