From quaint small towns to waterfalls, rock-climbing and rhododendrons, North Carolina is a state that everyone must visit at least once in their lifetime
Whether you’re travelling to North Carolina or already live there, there are a myriad of wonderful tourist attractions that a person can visit, or rather experience. From quaint small towns to waterfalls, rock-climbing and rhododendrons, North Carolina is a state that everyone must visit at least once in their lifetime. Here are three attractions the NC Mountains have to offer:
Also known as America’s favorite drive, this road includes stunning scenery, breath-taking views, and incredible hiking trails for those who want to get out of the car for a little while and get closer to nature. The 469-mile drive winds through villages and colorful towns and connects the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park. Because the scenery changes dramatically with each season, this is a great road trip any time of the year; just be sure to take extra caution in the winter where sections of the Parkway may be closed due to snow and ice.
There are plenty of reasons why the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the nation’s most visited park: there are several hundred miles of hiking and horse trails along with over 700 miles of fishable streams. For those who want to see the local wildlife, there are plenty of viewing areas, as well. There are so many things to do in the park that a Smokies Trip Planner is recommended for visitors. Must-see areas include Newfound Gap, Fontana Dam, Clingman’s Dome and Cades Cove.
In Carver’s Gap which straddles the North Carolina-Tennessee border, the entire ridge over Roan Mountain becomes awash in a riot of vibrant pink blooms in the early summer. While wild rhododendrons are common in the area, in this region they can grow taller than a person and can completely carpet tens of acres. The sight and smell of such a concentration of flowers is simply spectacular. The flowers can be experienced up close in the Recreation Area’s Rhododendron Garden or can also be seen on Round Bald.
